Herb Mott
Western and Railroad Artist

HMS Crown is proud to induct Herb Mott of Taos, New Mexico into the HMS Gallery of Beautiful People.

Born and reared in New Jersey, Herb Mott has had a keen interest in art all his life, but did not become serious about it until he was attached to the Visual Aids Section of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he was committed to an artistic path and joined an art studio in New York. He has illustrated for magazines, books, commercial advertising and has built a reputation as an artist internationally.

"I put together my learning process in every piece I did", says Mott; and while still a young man, he  was inducted into the National Society of Illustrators in 1952 and has been an active member ever since. In 1956, he became a member of the elite team commissioned to do documentary paintings, plane illustrations, and activity scenes for the U.S. Air Force. In the late 1980's the U.S. Coast Guard developed a similar art program and for the last 20 years Mott has been actively creating for this branch as well.

In 1993, Mott went west and began an original series of Railroad Depots circa 1870 to 1930, which sold very well and became the cover art for Vintage Rails -- a national railroad magazine -- until it ceased publication in the mid 90's. Upon moving to Taos, NM, Mott turned his attention to western art and painted a variety of subject matter with emphasis on  western pictorials in lieu of traditional landscapes and still-life. His paintings literally tell a story and convey action as well as a snapshot of a bygone era. He has done three one-man shows in New York and is currently exhibited at Traditions Gallery near Santa Fe and at the HMS Crown Gallery on the Mount Vernon Town Square as well as the HMS Crown Virtual Fine Art Gallery.

He is a master of a variety of media ranging from Gouache (a blend of watercolors) to traditional oils.
