Frederick Remington was one of the most important Western artists ever. Born in Canton, New York in 1861, Remington was a cowboy at heart. He introduced the West and all its color and glarmour to New York and America. Technically accurate, Remington sensationalized and immortalized great Indian tribes such as the Commanche, Sioux, Apache, Arapaho, and numerous others. He was instrumental in helping the American public to know such great Native American chiefs as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and Chief Joseph. Like his concemporary Charlie Russell, Remington represented pictorials
of cowboys and Indians, gamblers, gunfighters, saloons and all the paraphernalia
of the Hollywood Western.
Prior to moving west, Frederick Remington had formal training at the Yale School of Art and at the Art Students' League. He began his career as an illustrator, working for many magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Outing. In the Spanish-American War he served as a war correspondent and artist. His unusual approach to color was used very successfully to set a mood and create the atmosphere of his choice. He often chose a single dominant color, applying paint richly and roughly, around which the rest of the picture was composed. During the last twenty years of his life he sculpted and executed a powerful series of twenty-four bronzes which were extremely popular and helped raise Remington to a position of true significance in the history of 19th-century American art. His paintings and later his sculptures display a vigor and sense of movement that identified his unique style. His works may be viewed in historical museums througout the country. Among the books he wrote and illustrated are "Pony Tracks" (1895), "Crooked Trails" (1898), and "The Way of an Indian" (1906). He died in 1909, having produced nearly three thousand paintings.
