Almost anyone will concede that St
Patrick’s Day is Christian on one hand and secular on the other. Whether
one is paying homage to the Saint or celebrating
the green, or both, everyone, for sure,
is wearing a bit of the green to avoid being pinched and enjoying the day.
The modern secular celebration is March 17,
which is widely thought to be the day of the Saint’s death. St Patrick’s
life story, as well as it can be known, is fascinating including his time
spent in slavery.
Around 1737 there is evidence that Irish immigrants
in the United States were observing the holiday publicly, at least in Boston,
and by 1766 there was a well organized Saint Patrick’s Day parade in New
York City.
Saint Patrick’s Day is as sticky as a “tar
baby” with themes for celebration with appeal to people from all walks
of life. You can choose from “wearing of the green,” elves, leprechauns,
drinking of the green, eating Irish food (including some splendid
breads,
scones,
stew and pastys),
pinching those without green, pots of gold at the end of rainbows, and
the general good humors of the Holiday which, characteristically, offers
lots of parties and light entertainment --- generally considered to be
a fun day for all.
Ireland has given us many good things like Irish
bread, Irish Scones, other Irish Saints, Irish stew, and delicious treats
such as the world famous McGinley's
pasty (oggy or hoggan), Mick's
Dublin Apple Pie, Irish
Potato Candy, and a sackful of toasts,
blessings, and traditions.
