general remarks by Terry Turner
At one time, many years ago, I worked along side Paavo Airola, N.D., Ph.D., a great naturalist, at Spa Rio Caliente in old Mexico, in the state of Jalisco, just north of Guadalajara. Dr. Airola was very fond of “fasting as the royal road to health and long life.” And I feel I observed him achieve remarkable results with fasting. We often had many patients under his direct supervision at Rio Caliente and I was always amazed at the beneficial results that seemed to come along rather quickly. Fasting is a popular method of detoxification for, rather quickly, the body can begin cleaning cells of noxious and poisonous materials. The body will start moving these toxic materials along in the system so that body can process them to be excreted from the body. This allows the body to commence the healing process or processes. Fasting means to deprive oneself of food for a specific period, usually for therapeutic or, sometimes, for religious purposes. Various medical publications and assorted medical doctors, along with many other healthcare professionals have presented studies and articles that, therapeutically, support fasting as a means of ridding damaging materials from the body. The most likely precaution you should consider regarding fasting is that as pollutants are released from internal storage in your body some distress may occur and your liver could become overloaded. During your fast, the concentration of toxins in the urine can be ten times higher than normal, but once your body is freed from this noxious and burdensome toxic load, the body will more resources available to bring to bear on the healing process. A healthcare professional, knowledgeable about the detoxification process, is the best qualified to help you enter, conduct, break, and compete a fast. Many healthcare professionals prefer juice fasting to water fasting, believing the juices expedite the process of detoxification and impose less stress upon the individual. At Spa Rio Caliente, we often fasted with diluted fresh Aloe Vera juice. Juices used for fasting ought to be diluted with pure, distilled water. You can expect to become familiar with Herxheimer's reaction, which refers to your symptoms seeming to be more intense (worse) as toxins are loosed from your body. In my personal experience, I have often felt like I had quadruple flu for a few days when reaching a toxin release overload. Some fasting people often report being energized, but usually this feeling develops after repeated short fasts freed the body of many toxins, and the body freed of some of its burdens naturally feels more energized. The first fasting program for a toxic individual often produces a feeling of fatigue that deepens as the body struggles to clear itself of toxins. Because of this fatigue, working people should consider planning a short (and supervised) fast when time and circumstance can allow the fasting party to be under minimum stress and obligation. If your undertake a fast, your body is extremely busy (obligated) as toxins are being freed from cells and other locations, dumped into the lymph or blood transport, scheduled for processing by the liver and kidneys, and finally processed by the bowel and urinary tract for final excretion. It is very taxing and requires energy resources that your body has never attempted to bring into full play. It is well to realize that the whole process of eating and digestion of foods requires a tremendous amount of physical energy including places a load on the heart and lungs; therefore, fasting allows the body extra energy for detoxification. Starting a fast, conducting the fast, breaking a fast, and terminating a fast absolutely requires special and professional guidance so that the cleansing effort is not lost by inappropriate eating. Fasting is not for all of us; a hypoglycemic often finds it very difficult to fast, even for short periods of time. A guided fast may, however, prove a valid therapy for some individuals wishing to speed the detoxification process. Please do note that not every healthcare professional is qualified to implement or supervise a fast on your behalf. Take steps to be sure you have good, experienced, professional guidance in this regard.
